My Honest Thoughts on Owning an EV — From a Hardcore Car Guy

Let me start by saying this, I’m not here to talk about how eco-friendly EVs are or debate emissions. This post is about my personal experience owning an EV, and who I think it makes sense for.
Now, I know in the international car community, EVs are often hated. And while I’m not here to unpack all of that, let’s talk about us, the local scene.
There’s a weird thing I’ve noticed, people who call EV owners “not real car guys” or say things like “EVs are for softies” usually don’t even own a car themselves. Truth is, not everyone needs to be a petrolhead. For most people, a car is just a way to get from A to B not a weekend project, not a race car, not a statement.
I’m a car guy. I live and breathe performance. I’ve built some of the fastest cars in the country and I love my tuned machines. But you know what else I love?
Comfort. Convenience. And not spending ₹25–40k a month on fuel just for sitting in traffic.
Why I Bought an EV
For daily use, my commute is brutal 20 km one way, stuck in bumper-to-bumper traffic for 60–90 minutes. No open roads. No fun. Just crawling. Driving my tuned cars in that kind of traffic is not just pointless, it’s painful. And expensive.
I once drove a friend’s EV through the city, and that changed everything for me. It was smooth, quiet, stress-free, and honestly, quick enough for city use. I could squeeze through gaps easily, brake with one pedal, and just get where I needed to go without the usual drama.
And then there’s the math. Since switching to an EV, my monthly commuting cost has dropped to ₹3–5k. That’s a massive saving compared to what I was spending on fuel. Now, I take my fun cars out on weekends when I can actually enjoy them the way they were built to be driven.
No Guilt. No Shame.
I’ll admit, I hesitated before buying an EV. Being in the performance tuning space, I worried about how people would react. “You? In an electric?” But then I realized, this is my car for commuting not racing, not flexing. It fits the job, and it makes life easier.
Owning an EV doesn’t make me less of a car guy. It makes me someone who’s practical, especially when there's no fun to be had in traffic anyway.
So, Who Should Consider an EV?
If you’re using your car purely for commuting, especially in heavy city traffic... and you’re tired of fuel bills, gear changes, and parking stress an EV makes a lot of sense. It’s not about replacing your passion it’s about making your daily grind smoother and cheaper.
Keep your ICE (internal combustion engine) car for the weekends and joyrides. But for the 90-minute crawl to office every day? Trust me you’ll start appreciating the EV life.
Awsome one bro 😎 it’s practical thing you have spoke and it is a reality.
So brilliantly put bhai.
Keeping it very simple.
Keep the performance cars for the weekends and chill in the city traffic on the EV. No stress weekdays and full adrenaline weekends. Cheers Madrasmechanic!
